On The Shelf – Some Young Punks Naked on Roller Skates

This is a special entry from The Lady and I, we are finally getting around to talking about one of our favourite wineries, Some Young Punks. Some Young Punks are not only dishing out good looking and great tasting wines, but they are also a proud SA local winemaker.  They were pretty much the winery that introduced me to awesome label design, shaking up my view on an industry that I thought was characterised by traditional and plain labels.

Some Young Punks was established in 2006. They are part of the new generation of young Australian winemakers who focus on small scale wine production that explores some interesting blends and styles of grape to bring something that mixes a little of the new with the old. The small scale nature makes the wines rather sought after, so make sure you snap up a bottle whenever you see it otherwise you might not be able to enjoy it another time. The Naked on Roller Skates is not the first bottle of Some Young Punks we’ve had, but it’s the bottle that happened to take our fancy at the moment. The wine is part of their Pulp Series of wines, which is inspired by the images associated with ‘low brow’ literature from the 20’s through to the 50’s. The images act as the sirens to draw people’s attention to the wines and help them stand out from the crowd. They certainly achieve that, catching the eye of The Lady and I. The Naked on Roller Skates is the perfect blend of cheekiness and class that the old pinup artist could capture so well. The image is bold and feisty and just looks gorgeous. It shows that sometimes low brow knows how to have a lot more fun than high brow and sometimes you just need to let your hair down and go with it.

The wine itself is a blend of Shiraz (85%) and Mataro (15%) from McLaren Vale. It has a really deep purple colour to it and strong dark fruity flavours on the nose. The dark fruit flavours continue throughout the wine, you can really pick up deep red and black berry fruits like plum and cherry. The fruits didn’t make the wine too sweet though. I’ve probably had the bottle for about a year, on top of being a 2010 vintage, and the wine has really mellowed out. It’s got a very smooth texture and almost savoury sort of flavour to it. You also get slight hints of liquorice and a really pleasant lingering spiciness. We couldn’t quite put our finger on what, just a general nice spice, which provided a very pleasant aftertaste. The wine also wasn’t too heavy. As you can see The Lady and I indulged in some rather big glasses, but despite the bold, dense flavours the wine itself was not so intense that you felt like you needed to have a nap afterwards. This is something that is always a bonus when you’re trying to feel like a mature, adult human being who drinks wine.

The wine inside definitely lives up to the label as it’s quite a bold, intense wine yet there’s that surprising smoothness to the finish. We really couldn’t get over the smoothness despite those big flavours. It’s definitely the sign of a high quality wine. Naked on Roller Skates may be the first Some Young Punks wine we have featured on the blog, but it certainly won’t be the last.

Today’s post again gives you, our readers, two recipes for the price of one. Last week you may remember we experimented with Mr Black’s Coffee Liqueur and also sampled a rather delicious date flavoured beer from Burleigh Brewing, the Dream Date Dark Ale. The Lady and I enjoyed both of these so much we just had to have more of them and then the crazy idea hit us, how about we combine the two for some simple but hopefully incredibly tasty beer cocktails. So we once again went a little mad scientist and mixed up a few experiments and the results, well, an interesting thing happened. Out of the two drinks we made, both were quite nice, but The Lady really liked one and I really liked the other so we present to you, The Lady’s Dream Date and The Gentleman’s Dream Date. Enjoy!

 

The Lady’s Dream Date

15ml Ginger and Cardamom Syrup

30ml Mr Black’s Coffee Liqueur

Burleigh Brewing Dream Date Dark Ale

In a fancy glass, mix together the syrup and liqueur. Top with beer then stir to combine. The syrup is really easy to make, just combine one cup of sugar to half a cup of water and then add ginger and cardamon pods to your liking. We chose ginger and cardamom as they are flavours that are meant to pair well with dates. I only had powdered ginger on hand (as usual this was a last minute decision and something I had to make RIGHT then) and used about a teaspoon and a half of ginger to six cracked cardamom pods for a more ginger heavy syrup.

You can definitely add more ginger syrup if that’s how you like it as the drink can definitely take it. We were concerned the syrup might make it too sweet, so that’s why we kept it on the down low, but it didn’t. The Lady described the drink as having a flavour reminiscent of those hard boiled ginger sweets your grandparents would always have and everyone knows grandparents only ever had the best food to constantly fatten you up so this is definitely a good thing. The ginger sweet flavour was at the top of drink, what you captured with the first mouthful. As you drank more and dug deeper into the flavours and the aftertaste the strong malts and hops of the beer became more pronounced. The coffee was definitely a subtle flavour, adding a slight bitterness along with the beer and combining with the syrup to give the drink an almost medicinal, herbal sort of aftertaste which left a very pleasant flavour in your mouth.

45ml Mr Black’s Coffee Liqueur

1 tablespoon Fee Brothers Chocolate a Bitters Spiked Whipped Cream

Burleigh Brewing Dream Date Dark Ale

Pour liqueur and cream into a fancy glass. Top with beer. Stir to combine. The cream is similar to what we used in the Red Wine Chocolate Cake, just without the Mork cacao powder.

Gentleman's Dream Date

This was my favourite but also the one we were most unsure of at first. Cream and beer isn’t exactly a new thing but it is usually only used in conjunction with a dark stout, like a Guinness. The Dream Date Dark Ale is certainly no where near as heavy or creamy as a stout, but we thought the flavour of the beer combined with the coffee of the Mr Black would work, sense be damned! Luckily for us, it did. The Lady felt the drink was almost too sweet and this is why she preferred the less sweet, bitter, herbal flavours of The Lady’s Dream Date, but I really enjoyed this drink. For me that sweetness, combined with the dates in the beer and the coffee of the liqueur, made the drink taste like a like a creamy, caramelly iced coffee and not just the kind made over ice (which are lovely as well), but the really over the top kind that’s made with heapings of ice cream as well. The beer causes the cream to foam up immensely, it almost overflows, which gives you the same awesome creamy foam that you would get with a spider or float. Not only is the foam delicious but it gives the whole drink a creamy flavour. The Lady’s drink also generated some foam, from the syrup, but that simmered down over time whereas the cream meant the foam on this badboy stuck around the whole drink. The drink itself takes on a real caramel colour and the beer and cream don’t overpower the coffee. The drink still has a really strong coffee smell and the coffee and hops do give it a slight bitterness so it’s not all sweetness.

Both of these drinks aren’t really for everyone. Even The Lady and I had our clear favourites. Still, each drink has some really interesting flavour combinations going on that beg to be tried out so you can see for yourself. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised , especially those of you who are fans of iced coffee or ginger lollies.

On The Shelf – Burleigh Brewing Co Dream Date Dark Ale

After sampling several rather good looking and extremely tasty New Zealand beers I challenged myself to find more Australian beers that could go toe-to-toe based on style and flavour. I was sure there was some out there just waiting to be found. Lo and behold there were and the first one that I found comes from Burleigh Brewing Co.

Dream Date

Burleigh Brewing Co is a Burleigh Heads, Queensland based brewer. It is the Gold Coast’s only craft brewer. Burleigh Brewing have built their brewing philosophy on marrying the brewing traditions of the past with a sense of adventure that allows them to experiment with new combinations and styles. They push this philosophy to the limit with their ‘A Bit On The Side‘ line of beers. Nothing seems off-limits here with interesting flavour combinations released in small batches. It was one of these Bit On The Side beers that really caught our attention, the Dream Date.

As you can imagine the Dream Date features dates. Crazy I know. The story on the bottle goes, the Burleigh Brew crew sampled a rather delicious, smooth, sticky date liqueur and just had to have more. Doing what they do best they married that sweet date flavour to a dark ale. The beer blends a shed load of dates with select medium and dark malts, as well as aromatic hops, into a big 5.7% ABV, 50 IBU package.

The label is very cool. It’s right up my alley, mixing comic book style artwork with some crazy, vibrant colours. The bottle shows a classic image of two lovers, but the bright colours make it modern and fun. It also has a very Roy Lichtenstein, pop art style to it. The Lady and I could imagine the label hanging on our wall. Coupled with the whole narrative of falling in love with the date liqueur and having their breath taken away, the name and art all really work well together. It certainly makes an impression and plays well with the idea of being different and experimental.

The Dream Date, as expected, pours a quite dark amber colour. The Lady showed off her beer pouring skills and was able to get the Dream Date to pour with a good sized head, which had a slightly caramel tinge to it. I couldn’t pick up much in the aroma, just some faint sweet notes and the undertone of malt. I was also expecting it to be a heavier beer than it was. The other day I had the Little Creatures White Rabbit Dark Ale, which was a very heavy, intense sort of beer. This was a lot lighter and didn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. By virtue of being lighter it was actually quite refreshing, like going on a blind date and realising the other person is actually a normal human and not all the crazy things your mind thought up during the day. The beer tasted sweeter than I expected, but The Lady felt this was an appropriate level of sweetness and I’d have to agree. It had a really nice caramel and toffee flavour from the dates, with a few hints of vanilla and spice that finished with some hoppy bitterness. This left a rather pleasant bittersweet aftertaste, but I’m not going to relate that to dating because The Lady may get angry with me. The Dream Date gave off some interesting flavours, but those accustomed to dark ale may be a tad disappointed by the lightness, sweetness, and freshness of the Dream Date. Personally, The Lady and I were a fan of this experimental blend of dark ale.

It’s early days but already my quest to find cool, good looking and interesting Australian beers has been a success. The Burleigh Brewing Dream Date Dark Ale was not what I was expecting at first, lighter and sweeter than other dark ales, but very tasty and draped in stylish Lichtenstein-esque design. Dream Date? Close enough.

Now Serving – Mr Black’s Invigorating Tonics

Because we’re such nice people and because you, our adoring audience, deserve it The Lady and I are bringing you not one but TWO drinks today. I know, I know we’re pretty awesome and modest people. We were just so impressed with Mr Black’s Coffee Liqueur that we had to share with you two tasty experiments.

Mr Black

Mr Black, located in Erina, New South Wales, started the recent trend in crowd funding Australian spirits on local site Pozible. They were successful and were able to bring their cold-drip coffee liqueur to the masses, which is great for us because it’s delicious. The guys at Mr Black went through over 340 iterations to find the right balance of coffee flavour that wasn’t too sweet and loaded with overbearing vanilla and caramel flavours. Mr Black comes in what at first looks like a rather nice but plain bottle. It’s very nicely shaped and the double walling of the glass shows off the deep blackish/brown of the liqueur. The real treat though, and what makes Mr Black stand out, is the artwork by Dale Bigeni. Not only is the artwork very cool, a rather dapper and impressive looking owl, but the way the art is integrated into the design of the bottle is also very impressive. The owl is done in black line-work on the inside of the back of the bottle. As you progress through the bottle the owl is slowly revealed. It’s just a very cool and different way to design a bottle that we are definitely a fan of. Plus it encourages you to get through the bottle quicker to reveal the artwork, so well played their Mr Black.

Mr Black have a bunch of classic cocktails that have been given the coffee treatment listed on their site. They all looked and sounded great yet we noticed something was missing, a Mr Black take on the classic tonic based libations. With some quality tonic in tow and a bit of imagination we rectified that and we think our Invigorating Tonic’s are up to the high standards of Mr Black.

45ml Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

2 dashes Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters

Fever Tree Tonic Water

3 Coffee Ice Cubes

Lemon twist

Coffee grounds

Mr Black

To make the coffee ice cubes brew your coffee as usual then freeze. Put the ice cubes in the glass, add a dash of bitters and top with tonic water. Add the Mr Black, lemon twist, second dash of bitters and coffee grounds.

The first tonic was super decadent. Combining the coffee liqueur with the coffee ice cubes gives it a deep, rich coffee colour, aroma and, most importantly, flavour. The two coffee flavours combine as the ice cubes melt rather quickly and together they are very strong and tasty, but not too overpowering as the lemon twist gives it just enough tart sweetness to make it very drinkable. The tonic also doesn’t impart too much flavour to make the drink overly bitter. It’s also quite a fun drink as the tonic water generates a lot of froth and foam when its added to the coffee ice cubes and bitters. A small amount of this foam remains when you’re drinking the drink, which makes it very reminiscent of an espresso coffee.  The richness of the drink, and I assume the foam, also contribute to a very thick, but nice mouthfeel. Even though it’s a cold drink it feels more suited to a winter’s day, something to finish your evening with. The second tonic, on the other hand, is very much the reverse but equally as good.

Mr Black’s Invigorating Tonic #2

45ml Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

2 dashes  Bittermen’s Hellfire Habanero Shrub

Fentiman’s Tonic Water

Ice cubes

Lemon slice

Coffee grounds

Mr Black

Put the ice cubes in the glass. Add one dash of the shrub and top with tonic water. Add the Mr Black, lemon slice, second dash of shrub and coffee grounds.

The first tonic may have been a decadent winter drink, but the second tonic is a much fresher and brighter drink that’s definitely suited to a hot summer’s day. It’s lighter in colour and the tonic didn’t generate that intense foam, which gives it a lot lighter feel on your tongue. The coffee flavour, which dominated the first tonic, becomes more of the background flavour as the lemon and shrub come to the front as the initial flavours. The habanero shrub gives the drink this really nice spicy heat. People might think it’s weird to add chilli heat to coffee, but man does it work here. It just gives the drink that something different that’s a little bit special. The lemon again provides the sweetness and the coffee, mixed with the more herbal Fentiman’s tonic, gives the drink a slight herbal bitterness to finish. You really get a multitude of different flavours here, going from spicy, to sweet, to a pleasant bitter end which leaves you feeling mighty refreshed.

Normally The Lady and I like to keep our tonic with our gin. We really love a good gin and tonic. That being said, a Mr Black and tonic is damn fine thing. These are just two experiments with this tasty coffee liqueur that show off the wide variety of applications for this very nice liqueur and we can see many more delicious variations in the future.

Out & About – Bank Street Social

Over the weekend, The Gentleman and I were invited out to the new and trendy West End bar Bank Street Social. I was intrigued to try out this little place, mainly because I heard that in the process of fitting our their venue, the owners of the bar, as well as their kind friends and family carried around 7000 bricks down the stairs to the basement space in order to finish the gorgeous exposed brick wall. Let me tell you right now, their effort was worth it. This wall is pretty gosh darn impressive. The interiors remind me of an old fashioned, almost secret and hidden bar. The space is also surprisingly large, the bar is hidden downstairs and you expect to walk down into a cramped little space, but it’s quite an open and long bar that didn’t get too cramped even on a busy Saturday night. We also felt very hip and trendy being in Bank Street Social, which I think goes hand in hand with the feeling of exclusivity and old school hidden bar charm! Being inside this gorgeous space, you would never guess that there is an array of fast-food establishments surrounding the entrance. However, I imagine these joints would come in handy for those who have perhaps had one too many!

Coincidentally, that same day we discovered that it was actually International Rum Day! So we decided the best course of action would be, of course, to drink up some tasty rum! We had heard a lot about Stolen Rum, those cheeky New Zealanders across the Tasman, previously and were eager to try some out. Upon recommendation from our friend behind the bar, we were served up a delicious portion of Stolen Spiced Rum with Coke and Orange, known as a ‘Smoke and Coke’. The Stolen Spiced Rum was an experience I am hoping to repeat over and over. This rum blew my mind. Stolen incorporates fenugreek, vanilla beans as well as coffee beans which ultimately give this rum a delicious and dessert like flavour. Combined with Coke and topped with an orange slice this was the perfect way to serve this drink. Top stuff!

We got a little excited and told all our friends to order this beauty which resulted in it selling out. While this saddened me greatly, it gave us an opportunity to try out some more of what Bank Street Social had on offer. We also ordered some faithful and crowd pleasing gin and tonics. Always a winner in our books! We opted for two offerings from South Australia’s own Kangaroo Island Spirits, the KIS Old Tom Aged Gin and KIS Wild Gin. Bank Street Social feature an unbelivably wide selection of Australian spirits and beer. It’s great to see establishments like this supporting other locals, particularly when those locals make some damn fine booze. The Gentleman first made me aware of the Old Tom Aged Gin because I love gin and cats, and the label has both! The Old Tom makes a sweeter gin and tonic than usual, but it’s still damn fine sipping. These were another perfect choice for our classy night out. We love gin a lot. So, so much!

All in all, we had a grand time at Bank Street Social. Not only were we wowed by the delicious selection of fine local and international liquors on offer, but we were also impressed with the gorgeous decor and felt like proper socialites in Adelaide’s own social club.

Boozefood – Red Wine Chocolate Cake

Last weekend The Lady went on a trip to Melbourne to visit a friend of ours. Her weekend was filled with cake, coffee, and cocktails. All the essentials in life. Upon returning, I was fearful that she may be in cocktail/coffee/cake withdrawal so I baked her a welcome home present. May I present to you – The Red Wine Chocolate Cake!

Props go to the very talented people at Smitten Kitchen for providing the inspiration for this recipe, which I made a little extra boozy and indulgent because that’s what we do at The Cocktail Challenge.

Red Wine Chocolate Cake
6 tablespoons (85 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup (145 grams) firmly packed dark brown sugar
1/4 cup (50 grams) white granulated sugar
1 large egg + 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
3/4 cup + a good splash extra, I used Innocent Bystander Syrah
2 teaspoon Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters
1 cup + 1 tablespoon (133 grams) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Dutch cocoa powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon table salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Wine Cake

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease and line a 9-inch round cake pan with parchment. This is a one bowl recipe so grab a large bowl and on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth. Add the sugars and beat until fluffy. Add the egg and yolk and beat well with the electric mixer, then add the red wine and the chocolate bitters. The batter takes on a lovely purple colour at this stage and may look a little uneven, but that’s alright. Next you’re going to sift the flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt together, right over your wet ingredients. On a low setting mix the mixture until it is 3/4 combined, then grab a spatula and fold the rest together. At this stage I tasted it and decided to add a splash of extra wine. The mixture isn’t too wet so it can take the extra liquid.  Transfer the batter to your prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. The top of the cake should be shiny and smooth when it’s done. Cool in the pan on a rack for about 10 minutes, then flip out of pan and cool the rest of the way on a cooling rack.

300ml Thickened Cream
1 teaspoon Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters
1 teaspoon Mörk Dark Chocolate and River Salt Cacao Powder

Whip your cream. I showed off and did it in a mason jar. No going to the gym for me. Once your cream is pretty whipped, add in the bitters and cacao powder, and whip a little bit more to incorporate. You could maybe add a little bit more of either, but I think the cream was delicious as it was. It had a fantastic flavour, which wasn’t too sweet so it paired well with the cake and didn’t make things too intense. The bitters give it a spice flavour that has a bit of a kick and the cacao powder provides that chocolate flavour, but with the bitterness again making it very tasty without being sickly. You can definitely dollop a big spoonful of this cream on your cake and not worry too much (well maybe you should worry about your waistline, but ain’t nobody got time for that when cream and cake are around). The leftover cream is also amazing added to a Mörk hot chocolate or to flavour your coffee.

The cake doesn’t really rise and it ends up being a low cake, which feels very much like a dessert cake. Really you can eat cake anytime, and you should, but some cakes just gravitate towards a certain time of day. The mix of wine and bitters also lend it to being an after dinner cake, a fine way to finish off an enjoyable evening. Adding the bitters was a last minute but rather amazing move. We had run out of vanilla essence and I was going to add some brandy or the like instead but then I remembered the bitters I had got from a friend. Chocolate bitters for a chocolate cake, perfect. The bitters just enhanced the flavour and smell so much. Instead of just being chocolate there was a depth to the aroma, a whole host of spices coming out to play. That depth carried over to the flavour, which was so nice. A wonderful blend of spices and chocolate that wasn’t too sweet and really invited you to eat more. In the Smitten Kitchen article they said the wine doesn’t completely cook out. I couldn’t taste booze per se, but some of the fruity flavour of the red wine was there. The red wine also helped make the cake very moist, and deliciously dense. Next time I’d like to really use my Mörk cacao powder in the cake as well. They may scold me for not using it for hot chocolate, which is devine by the way, but the Mörk powder has such a wonderfully deep, dark, and bitter flavour that I think would really add to this already amazing cake.

Slathered with the chocolate cream this is one fine dessert that is perfect for impressing that special someone. The Lady was certainly happy to see it on the counter when she got home and for a moment she forgot all about her wonderful time in Melbourne and was glad to be home. Good cake will do that to you.

Now Serving – Blood Orange Collins

A little while ago The Lady and I were lucky enough to secure a bottle of Four Pillars limited run Barrel Aged Gin. We were so pleased with the original Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin that staying up till midnight on World Gin Day to ensure we got a bottle was a small price to pay. We’ve had the bottle for sometime now but never got around to properly trying it out. Rightly we’ve now rectified that, making a variation of the classic Tom Collins.

We chose to make a Tom Collins style drink based on the exceptionally stylish little recipe book that came with our bottle of Four Pillars Barrel Aged Gin. It contains a few classic recipes you can make with the Barrel Aged Gin. It’s just a really nice touch that shows the dedication and care taken to deliver an awesome product by Four Pillars. The design of the bottle continues that dedication to style, as the bottle has the same aesthetic as the original Rare Dry Gin. The lighter tones echo the colour of the aged gin quite nicely and the two bottles look quite dashing on the shelf.

Blood Orange Collins
60ml Four Pillars Barrel Aged Gin
45 ml Blood Orange Juice
15 ml Simple Syrup
Fever Tree Soda Water
Ice

Build the drink in a high ball glass filled with ice. Top with soda water. Add a fancy straw. I opted to grill my blood oranges a little bit with some sugar, but it’s not really an essential step. Simple syrup is also extremely easy to make, just combine 1 cup of sugar, I used caster sugar, and 1 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. When it has dissolved remove from the heat to cool, then refrigerate. It’ll last a little while, but if you up the ratio to 2 cups sugar to 1 cup water you’re syrup will last even longer.

Blood Orange Collins

Pouring in the soda water generates this delicious looking foam on the top of the drink, a lovely bright orange colour. Overall the blood orange juice gives the drink a gorgeous colour. It’s fun watching it change from the deep red to this light orange as the soda water does its thing. I know that classically a Tom Collins is made with lemon juice, but the blood orange is a fine substitute. It not only makes it look amazing but it has a really lovely flavour. The blood orange isn’t overly sweet, but it’s also not too sour or tart. As Goldilocks would say, it’s just right. It also pairs really well with the Barrel Aged Gin. Really any citrus would as the Barrel Aged Gin has a strong citrus flavour. As the Four Pillars Barrel Aged Gin is a limited production there’s little chance of getting another bottle. That means we can’t waste any on subpar drinks. Luckily the Blood Orange Collins is anything but a sub-par drink. Gorgeous in colour, delightful in flavour, not a drop of Four Pillars Barrel Aged Gin was wasted in its creation.
